Social Weekend: Fourth of July Picnic

Today is Independence Day in the United States and whether you're American or not, it's a great day for a picnic.

If you have a favorite picnic food, bring some to share!

Load up your plate, pour yourself a cold beverage, toss a frisbee or suggest some other game. Today is a day to relax and have fun with your friends and family here at CIC.

Later this evening after the sun goes down, grab a sparkler and let's watch a fireworks show together!

That was so much fun! Thanks for coming, and have a great Fourth of July!

(Note - the party will go on all weekend! Authors and characters drop in as you're able!)

I'm here to help set up. I brought potato salad, margarita fixings and a frisbee. I don't think they let us have alcohol in the park, so everyone say the margaritas are lemonade, if we get asked.

Kalila said...

I know you've explained it twice, Ricky, but I still don't understand this frisbee thing.

Nevin said...

Did you remember the Tofu Pups? You know I don't eat meat, so I can't have regular hot dogs.

Ricky said...

Oops. If no one else brings any, I'll go get you some, Nevin.

Charlene said...

I don't know how, but I managed to get a few boxes of burgers. I can grill 'em if you need me to.

That's terrific, Brandon! I wonder who else is going to show up. I hope Scruffy comes. I bet he'd like to play frisbee.

Candy said...

I'm on my way with an angel food cake and strawberries and Devonshire cream. This is going to be fun. I've made friends with a dog up here and he wants to play with Scruffy and chase Frisbies. Cap's a border collie. I hope it's not too hot. Maybe I'll wear a blue sort =of =lacy top my aunt bought me and black shorts. My usual all black outfit might be sweltering.
See you soon!

Nevin said...

I'm looking forward to the strawberries Candy! I'm so glad you're coming!

Scruffy said...

Woof, woof!!

DESTINY said...

Hello. I brought a cow to slaughter. We can have a barbeque. I enjoy steak.

Ricky said...

Uh, wow, Destiny. I had no idea you meant you were bringing a literal cow. I'm afraid I don't know anything about slaughtering one. Do they even allow that here?

I think I'll go throw the frisbee to Scruffy while the rest of you figure that out.

C'mon Scruffy!

Scruffy said...

Woof, woof!!

Pant, pant, pant, pant

Woof! Woof!!

DESTINY said...

Ricky, you slaughter the cow by killing it. It is rather simple.

Do not worry. It is it's Destiny to be eaten.

It is a rather cute cow, I will say that. Look at those eyes.

Let's not eat the eyes. Too cute.

Ed showed the boys - they yelled 'P-a-r-t-y!' They said they'd swim around shouldn't take long - look out for them next year!
That'll make it quiet here for a bit.
Happy Holiday!
I want to see the fireworks - they were my favourites - but normally in November.

I'm up for some sports! I haven't played a good game since I was in high school; now that I have the time, I want to make good use of it.

Hi Everyone. I didn't think I could come but the Unicorn brought me. I did something really bad at the place (stole mace from the sleeping guard and sprayed his buddy from the rear so they got into a big fight.) Don't know how they figured it was me but that's cool 'cause they locked me in solitary which is, guess where in the cellar, where I have my secret way out. they won't check 'til dinnertime and the kids are fallin all over themselves proud of what I done. So all's good. I got no money but picked these cherries on the way over.

Unicorns are shy so he'll stay invisible until it's time to go home.

Ricky said...

This is great! Thanks for bringing the hamburgers, Brandon, and I'm glad to see you, too, Gabby. I should've brought more frisbees.

Nevin said...

Does anyone play croquet? I could conjure a croquet set. Thanks for the cherries, Gabby.

Flower said...

I don't know how to play croquet but I can play Boules - not bowling but I've done that too.
I'm not quiet so rubbish now so our games are getting closer.
That's a good game to play too.

Nevin said...

Good idea, Flower! Let's play lawn bowls! Who's in?

Kalila said...

I'll start mixing the margaritas that we're supposed to call lemonade. Who's going to want one? Salt or no salt?

Candy said...

Whew, everyone! I finally made it! let me put this down on the table. What's that sweet old cow doing over there? Are we going to have fresh milk?
Oh, thanks, Kalila, I'd love one.
Look at my dog friend playing with Scruffy already.
Hi, Ricky and Nevin! It's so good to see everyone! I feel like I've been alone for ages.
You must be Flower. Let's go pick some of those bluebells over there, for the table, Come on, we might find other wild flowers too.
Is that kid over there Gabby? How on earth did he get here? Where's Shadow?
I'm so excited!

Ginger said...

I'll take one with salt, Kalila. Thank, you!

I brought a blueberry pie.

Oh, cherries! I love cherries, Gabby. And what a sweet cow! I'm going to make a daisy chain for her to wear around her neck.

Hi Candy! Hi Ricky! Hi Nevin! Hi Brandon! Hi Flower! Good catch, Scruffy.

Gabby said...

Blueberry pie! Wow, I haven't ever eaten this good! (Burp) Oh, excuse me. Just so good!

Ginger said...

Have some more, Gabby. These are fresh Jersey blueberries, the best in the country. Did you know that New Jersey is the blueberry capital of the world? We're very proud of that fact.

Ginger said...

By the way, does anyone know who the next Character of the Week will be? The suspense is killing me!

Ginger said...

May I have a burger, please, Brandon?

Lord Synedd said...

Greetings! It is a very pleasant afternoon, is it not? I have brought this magnificent wild salmon, caught just this morning, to grill, and a bottled of brandied pears.

I understand that fireworks are in order. I would be happy to help with the display. I am rather fond of elaborate displays of power, and would be glad to assist with the pyrotechnics in any way that I can.

Miss Kalila, you are looking quite lovely today! It is clear that you are no mortal; you shine with a brilliance that only the elevated ones display. I would be delighted if you would hand me one of those interesting looking drinks, my dear.

Mira said...

Hi all,

First I apologize, my internet provider has decided to celebrate all week by giving me random internet access. I'll join the picnic as I'm able.

Ricky is intrigued by a very quiet member, Brandon. Brandon, if you are willing, we'd like to learn more about you this Friday. Could you e-mail me?

In the meantime, I brought um....beer. What's a picnic without beer.

Shadow, you can have a sip of mine if you want.

Flower said...

Are the fireworks due yet?
Is anyone else freaked by the name 'tofu pups'? Hot dogs doesn't sound so bad - are the veggie ones called 'pups' - for real?

Ginger said...

Yes, "tofu pups" does sound kind of strange to me, too, Flower!

wv: 'dedgedog'. Is that related to a "hedgehog?"

Ricky said...

Nevin, I wasn't able to find you any of those Tofu Pups you asked for, but I got some garden burgers. I hope they'll do.

Nevin said...

That'll be lovely, Ricky. Maybe I can have one with cheese? The cheese doesn't have to be from milk from Destiny's cow. I hope it's organic, though.

I do hope we're not really going to kill the cow. I won't argue with Destiny, but it does seem just a bit unnecessary.

By the way, has anyone seen Bo?

Ricky said...

Bo was hanging out near the jogging trail last time I saw him. He seemed fascinated by all those young women in shorts.

Kalila said...

Here's a margarita, Lord Synedd, but aren't you supposed to be the enemy?

Gabby said...

The unicorn's nudging me. We gotta go. Thanks everyone. I'll remember this forever! G'bye!

Nevin said...

Bye, Gabby! I'm glad you got a good meal and enjoyed the fireworks!

Kalila said...

It was a pretty good show, for being put on by humans.

Ricky, show me again how the frisbee works.

Ricky said...

One doesn't play frisbee in the dark, Kalila.

Lord Synedd said...

Enemy? That is an odd choice of words, Kalila. You and Thor are competing for a prize, and the loss of that prize means eternal punishment, does it not? Are not you his enemy then?

I am competing for a prize as well, one which does not involve punishment, merely the handing over of the responsibility of ruling our country to someone who is better suited to the task. Does that make me my nephew's enemy? Does it make me my people's enemy, to have their best interests at heart?

I would say that you are much more Thor's enemy than I am the current King's. But, let us put such unpleasant talk aside and watch the fireworks!

flower said...

Fireworks! What could look more beautiful than rainbow coloured night and smoky bouquets of colour?
The first good thing that's made my heart do more than plod for a long time. Coo-l!

Nevin said...

I think they're lovely, too, Flower! It's so nice having you here.

Mira said...

Hey, I think my internet provider finally decided to work! Yay internet provider!

For those characters who don't know what an Internet Provider is, it's like an evil overlord who only notices you when it's time to pay taxes.

I hope everyone is up for an extended party. We still have so much food left over! Drop in as you're able, and chow down.

Detiny, thank you for the thought, but please take the cow back. We have plenty without slaughtering livestock. Really. It's such a cute cow.

Awesome fireworks display, btw!

DESTINY said...

Er, okay Mira. I'll take the cow back.

Although perhaps we could use her for a game? Ride the ferocious cow? Who can stay on the longest while the cow is eating?

Er, take a picture with the killer cow?

Mira said...

Killer cow? That's the sweetest cow I've ever seen.

Could we milk her? I've never milked a cow.

DESTINY said...

That is a killer cow. I'll have you know that cow is single handedly responsible for taking down Troy.

And don't milk her. She kicks.

Mira said...

Destiny, that was a horse. A trojan horse.

DESTINY said...

Were you there, Mira? No, I think not. Sometimes historians mess up on the little details, you know.

Anyway, I can't take the cow back yet, it's not her Destiny. So set her up for cow rides with the children, I don't care.

I want some blueberry pie. That looks good, Ginger.

Wow, I got paid!!! I made it to the picnic with a red velvet cake to share!

mmmmm mmmmm

My author resurrected me enough to let me get paid, and apologized for blowing my head off,but said I was still one for the compost pile. Oh well, at least I got to come to the picnic!

Hi headless

That's funny.

I had to go to my grandmother's yesterday. We had a picnic. I saw fireworks. There was a cute girl.

I didn't say hi though.

Shadow

Hi Candy. Hi Flower.

I brought some potato salad my mom made.

I'll have some beer and a margarita, okay?

Shadow

Anonymous said...

Hi Destiny,

I'll ride the cow. I never saw a cow before.

Shadow

Flower said...

Shadow
It's odd being with lots of people - but people watching here is far from dull... if a little scary.
My face hurts from the smiling but that's OK.
How 'you doing? Keeping off the bevvies I hope! Will is strict on that subject - he is so chilled about everythin' it's odd to see him go glacial. I've no urge to down the beer but the margaritas look 'pretty'.

Anonymous said...

Hi Flower,

I would take either. The beer or the margaritas.

How are you?

Do you want some potato salad?

Shadow

Flower said...

Hey Shadow
Nah - no food.

We could try more bowling - or not - it is dark.
We could just sit.
Have you got your i-pod? We could share mine - you can have the left ear. I'll find something with minimal shouting if you like.

Aidan and Kaelin didn't come did they - I didn't see any twinnies about - did you?

Nevin said...

Hi! I came to see if anyone needed help cleaning up, and-- oh, look! There's still some of Ginger's pie left! I'll just sit here and enjoy the evening, if that's okay.

Ginger said...

Why don't you come over here next to me, Nevin? I would love the company.

I'm just sitting here looking at the sky and the fireflies flashing under the trees, sipping the last of my melted margarita. I couldn't eat another bite!

Oh look, someone's shooting off some rockets over there. Pretty!

Nevin said...

This is so pleasant, Ginger. It's wonderful to have so many new friends. I've really enjoyed this weekend.

Don't worry about cleaning up, anyone. I'll send any leftovers to Gabby, who I'm sure would like some more food, and I'll vanish everything else.

Except the cow. I believe Destiny will find another place for her.

DESTINY said...

Okay Bessie. Back to Troy we go. Good cow.

Next time we have a potluck I can see that I should not bring a cow. I shall bring a boar instead.

I enjoyed the picnic. Ginger, your blueberry pie was scrumptious.

It was it's Destiny to be eaten by me.

Aidan said...

Sorry we missed the party, and Ricky's POW.

Tired now. Going to sleep. See y'all tomorrow.
