Getting to know you: Music

A short while ago, Aidan suggested we have a discussion about music in our lives. That was a great suggestion: let's do it!

We have many musicians here, and many who may not play or create music but who love music.

So, let us know - what does music mean to you? Do you play? Who are your favorite musicians? Or.....if you live in a place that doesn't have music, what do you have instead?

Music has it's own Destiny.

I enjoy playing the trumpet occasionally. I play 22 instruments, but I believe that the trumpet is my favorite. Although I am also partial to the violin and the clarinet.

The drums are sometimes the only appropriate instrument for the moment, however.

I used to play the trumpet, I'm sure that if I picked it up and spent a little bit relearning I could be as good as I used to be.
Other than that, no favorite musicians.

I listen to punk rock really loud on my Ipod to drown out other peoples' thoughts and the sound of my enemies.

Rise Against, Sum 41, Green Day, Offspring, Goldfinger, Dropkick Murphys, All American Rejects. That's some of them.

I'd never try to play music though. Instruments freak me out because they have auras. (Visual art things do too, like canvases and brushes and palettes, and I've never been to a theater that wasn't haunted.) Live music freaks me out a little bit, but I've been to concerts. I know it's a really different experience for me than for other people because I can hear all the concentration of the performers in the background. They make it look easy, but it's a lot of work.

I love human music, which is why I had to leave my clan. They didn't approve of fairies playing human music.

I studied with Maria Anna Mozart and I can both play and compose. I mainly play keyboard instruments, since those are my favorites.

Live jazz.

Ooo, jazz instruments are the worst, almost as bad as symphony instruments. Some of them are really old... creeps me out.

Music is a means to an end for me. Play bass, get women. It's the easiest way to get laid I've ever found.

My tastes run toward Aidan's, but Jason's favorite band is U2. He plays them until we hide all the CDs. They're good, but it drives us to drink, it does, hearing those albums for days on end.

Like Nevin, I can compose music and play many instruments, including lute, piano, and harpsichord. Nannerl was a terrific teacher.

I mostly play guitar these days and I have acoustic, electric, and electric-acoustic guitars. I have a favorite Stratocaster that works for most of my band's songs, but I like to mix things up a bit, too.

Nevin handles most of the baseline compositions for our band, then Vic and I roughen them up to make them more suitable for a rock band. I think very highly of Nevin's abilities, but he gets carried away sometimes with the whole sweetness and light thing. If I didn't watch him carefully, he'd have us playing nothing but ballads.

I play a little rhythm guitar, but I was hired to sing. Kalila liked my voice because it was suitable for a rock band. A reviewer called it "urban and gritty," whatever that means.

I don't play drums, but I bet I'd be genuis at them.

Boom!

Drums are cool! Nobody touches my drums!

I hear music in my head all the time especially when I am in my art studio.
It is so interesting. Often it is classical and I have no idea if it is remembered or invented.

Four of my characters in my novel are musicians too who are such talented souls. They have written a number of songs and melodies over the course of this novel.

I also hear music in my head all the time. It's beautiful; more beautiful than any music in real life, other than the ocean.

Loved music - never got to go to a concert that had less than 20 people playing - although, not always at the same time.
Got a case - might have an instrument.
Only listened to stuff that hurt... people's...eardrums - petty revenge.
Wouldn't leave my school where I thought I had friends to go to one with snobs.
Now I just won't do a lot of stuff.

I listen to Enya over and over again. I call it "music to write fantasy by." Only I'm not doing much writing these days, just thinking about writing.

My favorite album is 'Amrantine.'

I also listen mostly to classical music while driving. I almost never listen to music except when I'm in the car.

I meant, "Amarantine." I had to look up what that word meant. It means "everlasting", relating to the amaranth flower.

I used to like Heavy Metal. It was the opposite to my parent's boring life. Then, with Brian practicing, and playing at the club most nights I felt it was killing me somewhere inside , numbing my own thoughts. When I got to my great aunt's and was surrounded by opera and Les Miserables type. music I felt uplifted and filled with dreams and romance. It made me think wonderful things were possible. Fine music is surely a food for the soul.

Reggaie music and calypsos make my blood jump. Remind me of home too. Nothin' like the sound of drums echoing among the green Jamaican hills. Oh Mon, when I get near drums I can hit a beat that makes the spirits cry.

I feel really lucky I've been able to have a career in music, even though I'm not talented. The only down-side is that sometimes I wish I could just cut loose and enjoy a show instead of always having to think about the bottom line.

Still, I'm always involved with the scene in a way I never could've been otherwise, so it's a decent trade-off.

Turn the volume down, please. Other people live here too, you know.

Aww Mom...

Do it now, young man.

Thank you.

Have some dinner.

I know it's just playing, but something about being lectured by a mom makes me feel pretty good.

I like music, too.
