A Forum Game: Kris Kringle

Given that the Come In Character community attracts a wide range of people and creatures – from atheists to vampires – it’s certainly possible that not everyone here celebrates Christmas, but with December 25th just a couple days away, it might be fun to play a little holiday game.

Some folks call it “Kris Kringle.” Other folks call it “Secret Santa.” But, ultimately, it amounts to the same thing: an anonymous gift exchange among friends and family.

Normally, each participant would be randomly assigned another member of the group – by, say, plucking a name from a hat – and then have to purchase a gift for the chosen person (with a label that indicates the recipient's name and just “K.K.” or “Secret Santa” as the giver). It’s an exchange often practiced in offices, school classrooms, and large families – an inexpensive way for many people to give and receive a gift.

But, alas, we have no hat, so we’ll have to play this game a little differently.

To participate, you can do one of three things:

1. Offer hints as to what you’ve purchased and for whom – and see how long it takes someone to guess.

2. Use what you know about your fellow authors and characters to guess what they might purchase as a gift.

3. Feel free to swipe a gift from someone else, as long as you have a “Kris Kringle” gift of your own to offer in its place. (This is a good way to go if you're new to the site – hint, hint.)

Confused? Don’t worry – it’s all in good fun!

Just one last thing... In most “Kris Kringle” exchanges, there’s usually a monetary cap, but we’ll forget about that little detail for now. So, if you want to give someone a horse, for instance, go nuts. Let your imagination run wild – and let the gift-giving begin!

A Forum Game: 2012

You might have heard the news... Earth (as we know it) is coming to an end by the winter solstice of 2012. That’s at least according to ancient cultures such as the Mayans, who had remarkably accurate lunar and solar calendars – or so say some historians.

Why just tonight, my husband and I watched Hollywood’s version of the world’s catastrophic end in the obviously titled film 2012, and I must admit that witnessing all those destructive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tidal waves on a larger-than-life screen was unsettling and thought-provoking indeed.

So, just out of curiosity, I thought we could play a “game” of sorts. Of course, if you believe in the 2012 predictions, consider this not a game, but a chance to prepare for the worst.

Well, here we go... If the end of the world was nigh, what would you do? Where would you go? Who would you want to spend your last moments with? Or, better still, do you have a survival plan in mind?

All authors and characters are welcome to share. And who knows? Perhaps in the sharing, we’ll even hatch a group plan. Stranger things have certainly happened.

A Forum Game: Have you ever, redux

A very long time ago, this was the first forum game we ever played at CIC. We thought it might be fun to try it again. It's a fun game for authors and characters alike.

The game is simple:

The first person asks a question, starting with the words: Have you ever....?
The second person answers it, and asks the next question.

For example.

Person #1: Have you ever played the forum game: "Have you ever?"

Person #2: What's a game? What's a forum? What's an ever? Who are you and why are you following me around asking me questions?

Okay, my question: Have you ever been followed around by someone who asks you strange questions?

So, there you are! A CIC forum game: Have you ever.....?

Well. Have you????

Social Saturday Part 2: The Hike Continues

It's morning, and all the characters are sleeping as the sunrise paints the mountaintops and reflects the colors in the lake.  They're all a little stiff and sore, but ready to begin a new day.

Their rooms at the fabulous Fictional Fantasy Lodge are waiting for them tonight.  There will be hot tubs, huge, soft beds, massages and room service. Or, they can eat in the five-star restaurant run by Chef Christine Cuisine.  It's all fictional, so it's absolutely free!

Will they make it, or will the ferocious flying vampire squirrels get them first?  Stay tuned to find out!

Social Saturday: Endurance Hike

Hello, Everyone!  This weekend we are going to get physical!  We are going on an endurance hike through the mountains.  It's going to be tough, but fun.  We'll need to go through dense forest, across rivers, and up stony cliffs.

Characters, we'll all need to pull together. Those who are stronger (and have longer legs) will have to help those who are more, um, "ergonomically challenged."  If you have any special skills to help us reach our goal, let us know.  And everyone needs to bring a backpack with their essential items.

We may encounter some dangers on the way, so everyone needs to keep a sharp eye out.  There might be bears, or lions, or even ferocious, flying vampire squirrels.

Tonight we'll cook our dinner over a campfire, sing songs, roast marshmallows, and sleep under the stars.  Tomorrow we will complete the hike to our final destination - the spectacular Fictional Fantasy Lodge!

Fortunately the weather looks good, and we shouldn't encounter any heavy rains or high winds.  I have several maps and compasses to pass out to the group.

Ready?  Set?  Let's go!

Uh oh.

How do you get out????

Tell us all about it. We'd like to know, since we're stuck in there, too, and haven't got a freakin' clue!!

How to get out of this elevator???

A forum game: Make a prediction

This is a very simple game. When you post, you make a prediction about the person who posts after you. Then that person answers if you predicted correctly, and makes a new prediction.

Example:

Person #1 - I predict the person below me likes apricots.
Person #2 - I can't believe you said that. I loathe and despise apricots. They are the epitome of evil and will bring down Western Civilization as we know it. Okay, I predict the person below me wants to bring down Western Civilization.

And so on.

Quick note: I know games like these are a bit hard on our psychics, like Aidan. Aidan, maybe you can make this fun by deliberately guessing wrong. Don't want to leave you out!

(Games are for everybody!)

A forum game: Come as a Famous Person

Let's try something new today, just for fun.

Authors and characters alike. Pick your favorite famous person, fictional or real, and come as them. Then introduce yourself. If you'd like, answer one of the following questions.

Take your pick:

Question #1: Do you prefer a stormy night with cuddling or a romantic dinner at a nice restaurant with ambiance?

Question #2: Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

For today, let's pretend we're someone famous!

Game: The lying game

Notice both the picture and the word?

As writers we create illusions with words, too. Let's do that today!

The game is this: No truth allow. Only lies today. After all, truth is an illusion, and illusion, truth right? Let's have some fun and stretch the truth as far as we possible can. In fact, let's stretch it past it's breaking point. In fact, let's lie!

The Lying Game!

Forum Game: Only questions allowed

This is a fun, simple party game. Here's how it works: the first person asks a question, then the next person responds with a question, and so on. Only questions allowed. Example:

Person #1: Why is there a duck in my bathtub?
Person #2: You mean, there isn't a duck in my bathtub?
Person #3: What's a bathtub?
Person #4: Do you know where my keys are?

And so on.

Note: As always with games, feel free to relax and play as yourself and/or play them in character. If you are playing in charater, it's fine to play the game as your character would.

Forum game: Would you rather?

For Social Saturday, would you rather play a game together or spend the day cleaning your bathroom (with a toothbrush)? I hope it's 'play a game together' because that's what we're going to do!

The game is simple. The first person asks a question:

Would you rather be real or fictional?

The next person takes their pick (with explanation if you like, tho' it's not required), and then asks the next question.

As always, when you play as a character, feel free to play the game as your character would play.

I'll start: Would you rather be real or fictional?

Social Saturday: A forum game: Get the cookie

Let's play a game together.

I have the last cookie in the Universe.

How are you going to get the cookie from me?

Social Saturday: Have you ever?

For Social Saturday today, let's play a forum game together.
"Have you ever" is a simple game. The first person posts a question. The second person answers it, and then asks a new one.

Example:

Q: Have you ever played a forum game?

A: Forum? You mean an arena? I was a gladiator in the games after my family was captured by Roman Slavers. I escaped when I killed five lions with my bare fists.

Now my question: Have you ever killed animals with your bare fists?

So, there you are. Have fun!

Note: Remember to ask and answer questions in character!
