Getting to know you: Favorite Holiday

This weekend, many of us celebrated a holiday where people go on picnics, light fireworks and are overrun by ants. That's a fun holiday.

There are many other fun holidays. Some involve food, some involve parties, some even involve going into debt on a yearly basis. Or, some might include......getting presents.

What's your favorite holiday in your world, and why? Why do you like this holiday so much? Is it the good feelings? The decorations? The....presents?

Let us know - we'll celebrate with you!

And, in keeping with the theme, bonus points if you tell us about the best present you ever got!

Note: To stay in their world, let's make this a character only post.

Toss up. I like all the holidays that are a fresh beginning. New Year's, Rosh Hasannah, Lent.

A clean slate. Start over. A new beginning. Re-birth. Getting back on the right path.

That's the ticket. That's your Destiny.

Favorite present: Anything my nephew, Luxury, gives me.

He got me slippers last year. I never take them off.

Valentine's Day. It's really easy to find people who are in the spirit of things, you know?

Ricky said...

Well, I know I don't like Christmas. My family members always expect gifts, but they're never satisfied with what I get them, even if it's what they said they wanted.

Kalila said...

I enjoyed last Christmas, Ricky. It was the first time I ever went caroling.

Ricky said...

Yes, Kalila, your caroling adventure turned out well. I admit it. But you scared me half to death taking the band out like that, especially after I told you not to. Your guitar-playing was fine, but vampires have no business singing about reindeer and baby Jesus.

We celebrate when rangers are inducted into Sentinel. There's a pretty serious ceremony, and then we have a party.

Other than that, no religious holidays or even birthdays or funerals. It's kind of weird, having grown up in the human world, but I find holidays I used to celebrate now go by without my even noticing.

Ricky said...

That actually sounds kind of nice, Aidan, not having to worry about who expects what at different times of the year.

Nevin said...

I think every day should be a holiday!

Aidan said...

I like that, Nevin.

Yeah, Ricky, it takes the pressure off, but then sometimes Kae and I look at each other on our birthday and it's weird...you know? We used to always go ski and snowboard together on our birthday--it's over Christmas holidays--and I kind of miss that.

I did get a cool gift once. My dad fixed up my bow, had it restrung for me by a top shop and loaded me up with arrows.

Kaelin said...

I got that lighter from Dad. I still carry it.

Aidan said...

Yeah, Kae smokes, did any of you guys know that?

He can do it because we're immortal and it doesn't hurt us. But Lucy says it's disgusting.

I don't like to because smoke from us sinks and it's just kind of weird. I've seen humans notice that before. It's the sign of a demon, if you're looking.

Marc said...

We celebrate weddings, too, mate. Rather a biggish event--we don't have divorce or remarriage. Even if you marry a human, as Jason did.

Kalila said...

Marc, I didn't think demons and humans could marry. Please don't give Ricky any ideas. He gets some very odd human notions at times and it spoils all the fun.

Points? We get points? We're being graded on this? Ack!

Ricky said...

Kalila, you won't even let me say the L-word, so I'm sure not going to suggest we get married.

Kalila said...

Am I not good enough for you, Ricky? You're just a human. You're not that special.

Laurel said...

I'm shocked that among this crowd I'm the first to say Halloween. Unsentimental, free candy, fall, and everyone gets to dress up as whatever they want. Nobody looks at you funny if you want to dress like a tramp-the kind that lives under a bridge OR the kind that preys on other girl's fellows.

Ricky said...

Oh, come on, Kalila. You wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to...

Kalila said...

What do you mean you wouldn't want to? Men! Humans! I hate you all!

Ricky said...

Well, that was unpleasant.

Actually, I don't like weddings. The ones I've gone to have been really boring. I've been to funerals that have been more entertaining and optimistic. A gloomy wedding seems like a bad way to start a marriage, which maybe explains why I don't know many married people who seem happy.

Kalila is on to something, I think.

Lazaro said...

I like Halloween, Laurel. My meals think I'm a human in disguise and they don't try to run away.

Mira said...

Anon - don't worry. It's just the difference between an A and an A+.

Personally, I love Halloween, although I'm still bitter about the fact that my mom always ate half my candy. Talk about percentage off the top.

Marc said...

Sorry Ricky--didn't mean to twist anyone's knickers.

Aidan's right though, but not always for the right reasons. We're at war and operating on a bit of a short social budget, mostly due to time and inclination. When there's something to celebrate, like winning the war, no doubt we'll raise the rafters.

Hi

I like Christmas.

Last year I got an IPod. That was cool.

Kalila-

I'm married. It has its perqs but it can be overrated. Permadate status is good, too. The key to hapiness is separate dwellings. That way the toilet seat is always in the right place and you can call them over when you need a bug killed.

Kalila said...

Laurel, you offer excellent advice.

I always sleep in my own lamp or bottle. I sometimes take one of my homes to Ricky's apartment or hotel room, but I get anxious when he wants me to sleep in his bed. Human beds are uncomfortable and I would be very vulnerable if I fell asleep in human form.

I don't think I could ever live in a human home and it would be dangerously taxing to my abilities to bring him to mine.

Ricky said...

You could shape-shift me into your house, Kalila?

Kalila said...

In theory, Ricky, yes. But it would be very dangerous. I might scramble you by mistake.

Ricky said...

We won't do anything like that, then.

As for holidays, I've been trying to think if there are some I really enjoy. New Year's was fun when I was younger, but now it's just a lot of hectic phone calls and club visits to check on my acts. I like the idea of starting over, though. It's nice to know you say good-bye to the past and not be held captive by it.

Kalila said...

I don't understand what you mean about the past, Ricky. Actually, it's kind of funny when humans talk like that because there's not much past you can really have.

Isn't there a holiday where you eat and watch football on television? That seems like an appropriate holiday for you.

Ricky said...

I believe you're thinking of Thanksgiving, Kalila. I like the food and the football, but I don't like that I'm supposed to spend the day with my family. It always sounds like a good idea, but in actual practice it kind of sucks.

I've never visited this site before - too crazy for me. My dog, Charlie, stopped by once, but he couldn't answer today's question. Guess every day is a holiday for a happy German shepherd.

So, here I am for the first time. I'm seven, and I live in New Orleans, so it's a toss-up between two holidays - Mardi Gras and Halloween. For both, you get to dress up however you want... and you get free stuff, too. Beads and coins on Fat Tuesday, all the candy you can stomach on All Hallows' Eve. It's fun being a kid - hope I never grow up!

Oh, and the best present I ever got? Well, it wasn't on my birthday, but that would have to be the story my mom told me about Ruby Hollow. Yep, that was definitely better than the bike I got a few months ago.

Kalila said...

Mardi Gras sounds like my kind of holiday. I used to enjoy Carnival in Vienna. Good times.

Kaelin said...

Hi Shadow.

Aidan said...

Hey Shadow,
Who're you listening to on the Ipod?
I have Green Day's new CD going.

Anonymous said...

I Like Box Day very much!

Pelwyn said...

My favorite holiday is Midsummer's Eve, when we build a huge bonfire and have a feast and dancing on the lawn. Then everyone sleeps outside on the grass wherever they want to, until the sun comes up and we rebuild the fire and cook our breakfast outside, as well.

Anonymous said...

Hi Kaelin Hi Aiden,

I like Green Day. I don't have their new CD yet though.

I get CDs from the library. Do you like any others?

Hi Laura,

I like Halloween, too.

I like the candy.

Shadow

Laura Martone said...

Mmm... yes, the candy. My favorites are the little peanut butter cups - I trade with my friends fistfuls of candy corn for them. Yum!

Hi Laura,

I love peanut butter cups.

Now I'm hungry.

I like New Years and July 4th. Lots of explosions.

I make bombs on Saturday, no one care. My mom leave me alone. Lots of booms.

Rug caught on fire. Need to be more careful. Need more fire extiguishers. Make a list.

Pelwyn said...

The best gift I ever received was my engagement present from Mel. It is a necklace with a ruby pendant set in the center of a golden sun.

Ginger said...

I must agree with Anonymous. Boxing Day is rather nice. Christmas is over, but you still have all the leftover food to enjoy, your gifts to wear or use, and are still on holiday. No pressure, just relaxing.

I suppose if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the 4th of July. I adore fireworks, especially seen across the bay, the way the colors reflect in the water.

The best present I ever got? It was a cardinal that Matt carved for me one year when he was in Boy Scouts and had learned how to whittle. He painted it, too. He was eleven and I was nine and we fought a lot then, so it meant a lot that he made that for me. It was very unexpected. I still have it in my room.

I like Independence day, its a good time to be out and about. There's cookouts with all your favorite people, pools, and explosions at the end of it all. It was always great to have a day off from that hellhole I work at.

The best present I ever got wasn't for a holiday. It was after my father's funeral when my mom gave me his watch. It had been my grandfather's watch, too. I wear it often.

Laura Martone said...

Shadow -

Glad I could help. I'm hungry, too. :-)

Maxwell -

Thanks for sharing. No offense, but I think I'll avoid your house from now on.

I like my birthday.

Hi. What's Boxing Day?

(I chose Box Day.)

I like to learn about new days too!

Anonymous said...

Oh I just looked up "Boxing Day." Sounds like a very nice English/Candian New Zealand sort of day too.

Box Day is about boxes. All about boxes.
Celebrating them.

Pretty ones. Short ones. Tall ones.

Secret ones.

Surprise ones.

Sitting in one. Standing on one. Hiding in one. Stepping out of one.

Collecting them. Giving them away.

Opening them with surprises.

Tucking things into them.

It's very festive!

All things boxes!

Ginger said...

Ooops! Sorry, Anon. I thought you meant Boxing Day. "Box Day" sounds like fun, too. I'm a math teacher during the winter and I have to admit, I love boxes, too. They are just so... square. So many nice, perfect right angles.

You gotta love boxes.

(For anyone else who doesn't know what Boxing Day is, it's the day after Christmas. You see, in England the servants had to work on Christmas so the masters gave them the next day off and would give them their gifts, or "boxes," on Dec. 26th. Boxing Day is the day of "boxing up" the servants' gifts.)

So, what day of the year is Box Day?

Maxwell said...

Laura, you do not be scared.

Bombs are friends. They go boom and scare people away. Very good.

I like boxes too.

I'm celebrating good days at the moment cos think I had one at the weekend... go picnic in the park!

Will says I can pick somewhere remote where we can go for the big jolly holly season - it won't be a good day for me.

Hey Shadow and Aidan
Music talk!
I spent the morning listening to Little Boots - no laughing it wasn't my choice. Egg gave it to me for a 'not' present - for an accident prone drip he can sometimes say just the right thing. New music is a good thing even peppy electro-pop-y stuff.

Gabby said...

Last Saturday with you guys was my favorite holiday. I didn't hafta be tougher than anyone else. Didn't have to fight at all. Or steal anything. It was an awesome time for me and the food was the best! Cool people.
I've never had a party when everyone was nice to me before.

Mira said...

That's really touching, Gabby. I'm glad you're here!

Aidan said...

Hi Flower.

Hi Shadow.

I like a lot of stuff being played today, mostly of the punkish variety. Too tired to list bands. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow. Hey Mira, maybe we need a real music discussion. We've got the band, after all, to lead us...

Mira said...

Music discussion sounds fun, Aidan! Maybe the band would like to lead it off sometime.

Or...maybe you would. :-)
