Getting to Know You: Misunderstandings

It's inevitable that at times we will misunderstand someone's words, meanings, or signals.

Or even misunderstand a language.

Sometimes these miscommunications are funny, other times quite problematic.

Today, let's share our most amusing or most troublesome instances of miscommunication!

Once I was waiting to cross a busy street when a woman on the other side lost control of her dog who came darting across toward me. The owner started yelling, "Grab the dog! Grab the dog!" which I prepared to do. Suddenly a large woman next to me jumped sideways, almost knocking me over, as she screamed. "Rabid dog! Rabid dog!"

Demons misunderstand all the time. For starters, Vic is the only one who gets sarcasm. The others take me literally, so I have to watch what I say.

Then there are metaphors and general expressions of speech, like the time someone said our t-shirts and CDs were selling like hotcakes, and Kalila thought I had gotten them into the business of offering hot breakfasts to their fans.

Even movies can be problematic, as I once found out with Lazaro, who mistook a certain famous movie for a documentary: Pilgrimage of the Living Dead

So, yeah, I understand all about miscommunication. It's my life.

I had a hard time making the Council understand how serious I was about saving my mother.

Demons are mostly about threats and negotiation, something Aidan and I learned late since we weren't raised among our own kind.

I have to pretend not to understand sometimes, or like I don't know what people are thinking or whatever. Uncle Julian says it's being polite, but I think it's just like lying. I mean, everybody in Sentinel KNOWS I can read their minds.

It doesn't mean they have to like it.

Humans misunderstand, too, Ricky. How about all those people who thought when I said I was a fairy that I meant...well, you know.

Laura Martone said...

Oh, Nevin, that's rough. There are several words - like gay, queer, and fairy - that used to mean one thing and now mean another. Sometimes, such shifts in meaning can be very confusing, even for English-speaking humans.

I understand about misunderstanding. For years, I thought my mom was just hard to deal with - until I realized, as a teenager, what had made her so sad. Having to trade one's true love for an accidental life can make anyone depressed and temperamental.

Once I understood the true cause of her suffering, it brought us a lot closer. And kept us close - even though we're far apart, geographically.

Sorry about that, honey. Glad we figured it all out. It's no fun keeping secrets from someone you love... that can cause all sorts of misunderstandings and hurt feelings.

It took me a long time to learn that honest communication can work wonders for a relationship.

My Dad constantly mis-understood the word "no".

My brain is too pickled tonight to think of my own mishaps.

But I liked reading everyone's comments. Candy; that was great, really made me laugh. And Rick always has the greatest adventures. My buddy Cal always seems to know what's on my mind Aidan, so I have to agree with Kae; its very annoying. People are always misunderstanding me too Liv and Devi. At least you got each other now.

Nevin; uhm . . But you play a flute and that's cool.

I don't understand why it's annoying. I get annoyed because I have to explain myself all the time. I mean, why isn't it easier on them when I know what they're thinking? They don't even have to TELL me. Saves time and stuff.

But they are. Annoyed, I mean. I can tell that much too.

Maybe it's not so much your ability but how you push it off on them. (Rub their noses in it, rather.) Lord Prince Arond does get annoyed when you jump in and say what he was going to say. That's because you're usurping his power.

Aidan said...

Usurp... huh? I don't want his power. Sheesh, I don't have time to deal with my own.

That's just crazy, Jason. With the Lord Prince I'm only trying to HELP.

Marc said...

Hm. It must just be you, then, that's annoying.

Aidan said...

Ha ha. Very funny.

Amy,
Aidan constantly misunderstands the word "no" as well, especially as a young one.

As a body of water (ocean), I have constantly had a snit with people who come up to me and demand that I don't make waves!!!
