Emote This: Nostalgia

Ah, nostalgia! That sense that time is passing and what is gone was somehow better than the here and now!

When you get nostalgic, what do you think of? Better food, like Grandma used to make? Lovelier fashions and higher quality? Gentler manners? Do you sometimes find yourself reminiscing about days gone by, or is the best still yet to come?

Today, let's get nostalgic!

I remember when I was little, and my mom used to pull cookies out of the oven. They smelled so good. So did she. Her hair- I always loved when she held me because I could bury my face in her hair.

I wish I could do that now.

Demons not out for my blood?

Oh yeah, they've always been.

Huh. Gotta think about this. There weren't many cookies at our house growing up.

As a young wife and mother in New Orleans, nostalgia sustained me. Though I loved my husband, I wasn't happy with the way my life had turned out, and all I wanted was to return to Ruby Hollow. Thoughts of the delicious food, the endless music, the underground lake, the countless friends... all that I encountered on my accidental journey there in '49... nurtured me when all else felt hopeless.

So, yes, I think it's safe to say that nostalgia saved my life. But since returning to Ruby Hollow, I must admit that nostalgia is a thing of the past. It's the present that interests me most now... though, sometimes, I do find myself thinking back to my life in New Orleans and missing Olivia when she was a little girl... or, really, missing her at all.

I miss when Dad used to take me out for target practice, just he and I.

You weren't the target, though, right?

Kaelin said...

No, Nutmeg, I wasn't the target.

Phew! Just making sure.

Looking back, I realize that that might have seemed like a silly question, but you demons are funny creatures. No telling what "target practice" means to you. (wink)

No prob, Nutmeg. I've been target practice before. Actually, real recent like. Valid question.

Thanks, Aidan. I feel like less of a doofus now.

You know, following my great aunt's trail through the loves of her life makes me wonder if it was nostalgia that made her plan all this. Before, I thought it was guilt or curiosity but the farther I go the more I suspect it was just old age longing to repeat youth.

Perhaps it was for all those reasons, Candy. Hard to say what lurks in the heart of a mature woman.
