Character of the Week: Nevin!

I'd like to welcome this week's Character of the Week! It's our magical, peaceful and kind Nevin! Nevin, please tell us all about yourself:

Hi, everyone! I’m so happy to be here! I was told you want to know more about me, which is very kind of you.

I was born in a fairy glen in the part of England known as the Lake District. I’m afraid I was a bit of a rebel. I had a taste for human music and would often leave our glen to learn more about the instruments humans played. When I came home, I would conjure harpsichords and lutes so I could practice, but my music wasn’t welcome in my clan and they became irritated with me.

I left my clan in 1786 and went to Vienna. I had heard wonderful things about Mozart and hoped to meet him. I didn’t succeed in making his acquaintance, but I learned a great deal about music and when I heard that his sister was giving music lessons in Salzburg, I went to study with her.

That was how I met Kalila, who was also studying with Maria Anna Mozart. Kalila and I became very good friends. It was I who tried to get her to stay away from Thor at the Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Since she refused to listen to me, I felt I had to stay with her to protect her from harm. I followed her and Thor to America with a group of Scandinavian immigrants.

Together, Kalila and I became experts on American music. I very much liked ragtime and jazz, but Kalila got a notion to start a rock band. I wasn’t too keen on the idea, but we’ve been such good friends for so long, that…well, anything for a friend, right?

I help write songs for Kalila’s band and I play keyboards, synth, or any other instruments that may be needed for a song. I also try to cheer the band up when they’re feeling down, and I try to keep Ricky out of trouble. Ricky is the first manager I’ve really liked. He knows what we are and he likes us anyway. It makes me happy to have him as a friend, even though I sometimes have to make great sacrifices on his behalf.

But friendship is all about sacrifice, don’t you think? I’d love to hear everyone else’s stories about friendship and the sacrifices one has to make to keep those we love safe and happy.

What do you look like?

Hi Nevin,

So glad to talk with you today. You're rather a personal favorite of mine, so it's nice to talk with you in person.

I do have a question for you. What sacrifices have you made for Rickey? And another question - what are your goals, Nevin? What do you want out of life?

Nevin said...

Hi, Anonymous! Can I call you Anon? I look rather ordinary in human form, other than that I sparkle a little. I've tried very hard to do something about the sparkle, but I'm afraid it can't be helped.

Mira, I've made many sacrifices for Ricky, mostly just keeping an eye on him and making sure he isn't destroyed by angry deities. I'm scared of the gods, but Ricky can't be left unguarded.

My goals? I just want to play music. It seems that things are always happening to make that difficult, though.

Anonymous, Nevin has blond hair and is a little on the pudgy side. He likes sweets. And yes, he sparkles. When he comes to my apartment, he leaves glitter on my sofa cushions.

Not that I'm complaining. Kalila usually protects me from the gods, but when she's mad at me, Nevin always comes through. He was also the first band member I felt like I could trust. Everyone else has an agenda.

Kalila said...

What do you mean by "agenda," Ricky? If you mean that I expect you to abide by the terms of your contract, I fail to see how that's unreasonable of me.

Hi, Nevin! You're still my best friend, too! And you were right about Thor. He was a jerk.

Vic said...

What a boring bio, Nevin. I can't believe anyone really cares about all your fairy sentimentality.

Nevin said...

Why are you so mean to me, Vic? I wasn't mean to you when you were Character of the Day.

*sniffle*

What kind of magic can you do?

Jessie said...

Hi Nevin. I like the Fridays here. I like learning about new characters.

How old are you? What do you do for fun? Are you in a relationship? Are you really just 'friends' with Kalila?

Nevin said...

Anon, my magic is of a happy variety. I can conjure fun things like musical instruments, flowers, silver coins, and things like that. I can fix things, which comes in handy when the others have fights and trash the tour bus or a hotel room.

I'm especially good at making people happy, though.

Ricky said...

To be more clear, Anon, Nevin has some sort of fairy dust that he uses to make people sleep, wake, feel refreshed, or just feel happy and complacent. It comes in handy. Too bad it only works on humans, though. I'd love it if his magic worked on the other band members.

Vic said...

Just what are you trying to say, Ricky?

Bo said...

He's trying to say you're a pain, Vic. Can't you read between the lines?

Nevin said...

Jason, I'm afraid I don't understand your question. Are you trying to insinuate anything about me and the djinn? She's a very dear friend, but she's not my species, you know.

I suppose if I could return to my clan I might find one of my own kind with whom to have what you call a "relationship," but I'm in exile.

Ricky, my word ver says "plocksop." What does that mean?

Ricky said...

I don't think it means anything at all, Nevin. Don't worry about it.

Anonymous said...

Hi Nevin

You guys are funny.

Can I get some dust?

Shadow

Nevin said...

Do you want to be happy, Shadow? I can do that.

Anonymous said...

Hi Nevin

Yes

Shadow

Anonymous said...

Aren't you lonely?

Nevin said...

I'm never lonely, Anonymous. I have a lot of friends!

If anything, I'm often overwhelmed and have to get away from everyone for a bit.

Maxwell said...

Nevin, you want bombs? Make good noise at concert? Blow up Vic?

Get good price. Cheap.

Nevin said...

I appreciate your thoughtful offer, Maxwell, but bombs are very violent and just not nice.

Maxwell said...

Nevin, bombs nice, very nice.

Ok, you want chemicals? Change DNA? I do it cheap. I do it for magic.

Maxwell said...

Okay, what you want, Nevin. I want magic. Make trade.

Scruffy said...

Woof! Woof!

Wag, wag, wag, wag, wag.

Nevin said...

Hi, Scruffy! It's so nice to see you. I just love animals!

I'm sorry, everyone, but I'm going to have to leave for a little bit. We have to go set up some equipment for a show later tonight. I'll be back in about an hour.

Want to come along, Scruffy? You can fetch things for us, and maybe Kalila will conjure a steak for you afterwards.

Ginger said...

Dear Nevin,
1. What sacrifices, in particular, have you made for Ricky? I'm not sure I know what you meant by that.

2. I thought that fairies were little beings with wings. Are there different kinds?

3. Do you ever miss the Lake District? I've seen it in the "Pride and Prejudice" movie and it looks amazingly beautiful.

Olivia Harper said...

Hi, Nevin!

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to say hello today. The dog got loose this morning - and company came over - so, you know, it's been one of those days...

Anyway, here I am.

So, sacrifice, huh? Well, I'd say for a long time, I told no one about my mother's true whereabouts to protect her and the rest of Ruby Hollow. And, too, I sacrificed having my mother around (even though we were finally beginning to get along) because I knew she belonged elsewhere. That was a hard sacrifice, but I did it because I love her...

Nevin said...

Hi, Ginger!

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I have to stay vigilant and guard Ricky when I would rather be resting. I have to stay with him when I might otherwise have gone to a pleasant place like the Butterfly Center. I have to be brave against the gods when I would rather run away and hide. And in general, I deplete my powers when I'm using magic to help him. But I like Ricky and he's my friend, so of course I don't really mind.

Yes, I do miss the Lake District, but the world is very interesting, with many beautiful places. Giving up my clan for music was worth it, I think. I can go back any time I'm willing to renounce my allegiance with humans and their ways.

As for how we manifest, fairies can appear to humans in a number of guises. There are always imperfections, though, such as the way my simulated skin sparkles. Human bodies are difficult to replicate with complete accuracy.

Nevin said...

Hi, Olivia! It sounds like you made a very beautiful sacrifice on behalf of your mother. Love is a very special thing, though. You should be proud of your courage. The human instinct for self-sacrifice is one of the truly lovely and admirable qualities of your kind.

Olivia Harper said...

Thanks, Nevin. Very kind of you to say... you, too, have reason to be proud of your sacrifice. It's never an easy thing - but often worthwhile.

Scruffy said...

Woof!

Daisy said...

Are you small, like Tinkerbell? She's cute.

And do you grant wishes?

Nevin said...

Daisy, I can be small in comparison to humans, if I want to be. When interacting with humans, though, I've found it best to be the same size they are.

I don't really grant wishes, although if you wanted something very simple and positive like a flower, I could do that. Or if you were pulled over by a policeman, I could make him happy and complacent so he wouldn't want to arrest you.

I can't do anything big, though, like make your big life dreams come true. That's more Kalila's area.

Ricky said...

Kalila's wish-granting comes with a catch.

Kalila said...

I prefer to think of it as bargaining, Ricky. As you humans like to say, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Ricky said...

Well, there is such thing as being on time for a gig. Come on, Kalila...Nevin...where are the others? I'll be glad when I can trust you guys to be on time without my help.

Nevin said...

You should have more faith in us, Ricky. I think trust would be a very positive enhancement to your character.

Bye, everyone! I'll drop in after the show, in case anyone has any more questions.

Gabby said...

Hey, Nevin, I was just wondering...Well you said maybe I could join your band if I ever get out of here - well to be honest I wasn't able to bring my drums to the reformatory so am making do by using anything I can find to practice on.. Well. I wondered if maybe you could conjure me up a set later? I said I had some, but I don't, anymore.

It must be great living so long in so many places with good friends.

Nevin said...

I'm back! I think tonight's show went pretty well. Ricky is a bit unhappy with us, but he'll get over it.

Gabby, conjuring a whole drum set would take a lot of energy. If I did that for you, would you get to keep it? I'm happy to help, but if your captors only take the drums away, I'm afraid it would be a bit of a waste.

Olivia Harper said...

Hi, Nevin! Glad the show went well. Wish I could've seen it.

A couple weeks ago, Ricky said that there was no way he would book a gig for you guys on South Padre Island, but if that ever happens, please let me know. I'd love to see you perform!

Have a good night, wherever you are... and thanks for sharing your quirks with us. :-)

Nevin said...

Good night, Olivia! Sleep well!

Just testing my new avatar! Thanks, Nevin, for visiting us today.

Uh, Olivia, I think Ricky is keeping the band away from South Padre because of all the college kids there. I think he wants to protect them from... you know.

Laura Martone said...

Oh, I see... thanks, Christine! That makes a bit more sense, although, you know, SPI isn't always inundated with college kids. That's usually just a spring break thing.

P.S. BTW, love the new avatar... very professional looking!

Laura Martone said...

Oops, I just realized that I might have confused you, speaking for Olivia and all... but she's still asleep, the lazy bum. She's on what she likes to call "island time" - so I thought I'd answer for her. SPI was once a second home to me, so I know it pretty well.
