More than two years ago, we had a lively discussion about sports and fitness – and now that it's football season in America, it seems about time to revisit the matter of exercise. So, how about it, authors and characters? How do you prefer to burn calories? Do you enjoy long hikes, a rigorous swim, a soccer match with friends, or something a bit more meditative, like yoga?
Conversely, do you avoid exercise every chance you get? For instance, if you have the choice between an elevator and a staircase, which would you normally choose? Be honest!

Living on an island, I find it hard to resist exercising on a daily basis. Sometimes, I enjoy a long hike along the beach north of town, but most of the time, you can find me swimming in the gulf.
I try my best to emulate my characters, but I must admit they're in much better shape than I am. Still, it's no coincidence that I favor hiking and swimming, too - I'm just not as consistent as Olivia. Hopefully, one day, I'll grow up to be just like her!
I run and swim, but it's more for stress relief than actual exercise. My body doesn't change regardless.
My favorite exercise is sex.
I love walking and hiking but there isn't much freedom in my schedule right now to just go outdoors. I'm in traffic or tied to my desk or being a soccer mom most of the time.
I go to the gym most days, sometimes twice, doing palates, Zumba, strength, whatever. Go for long hikes a couple of times a week. I've always been athletic; horses, marathons, dog agility. Counteracts sitting writing the rest of the day.
Now my characters... they're too busy or too young to even think about exercise.
I envy you chaps swimming. the ocean up here in San Francisco is too cold for me - besides I think I've forgotten how!
I envy Kaelin's access to swimming, too, Jil. But I think you'd be surprised about your abilities - it's hard to forget how to swim, once your body's learned how. Now, for people like my hubby, who didn't learn to swim as a kid (due to an unfortunate incident during a swimming lesson), it's tough to learn as an adult. And it sure does bug him, especially since he loves to snorkel. Poor baby.
Yes, Aidan. We know.
But you also like riding that devil horse of yours a lot. And swimming for impossibly long periods underwater.
I like running and swimming. And riding. Aidan gave me and Kaelin horses as wedding gifts.
I like riding Nightstalker. I miss him. And he's not a devil. He's a sweetiepie.
I prefer to fight and spar for exercise.
I work out on the job, its physically demanding enough.
So is running from cops.
Yeah, Cal, I'm sure trying to evade the law would cause one to build up quite a sweat. Not that I would know from experience, mind you. ;-)
