I think it's a plant that has adapted so that birds won't try to eat it. Probably from Mexico. They have some weird stuff down there.
Yeah, but not that weird. I think it's a real snake hiding in a plant. Probably poisonous. Looks like a rattler. Marianne will probably try to take it home as a pet or something.

Oh, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that that's a real plant - South America is full of bizarre things that camouflage themselves and get you when you least expect it. Or so I've been told.
