Getting to Know You: The Name Game

Whether you're a human, a pet, a supernatural being, or something else altogether, your name is an important part of your identity – so much so that parents and authors alike often fret for a long time over such decisions.

If you're lucky, you may like the name you've been given. If not, perhaps you've considered changing it. Perhaps you already have changed it.

If offered a choice, what name would you give yourself, and why?

All authors and characters are free to answer – and remember, the sky's the limit!

OK, I'll start off.Names are so important and I hated the one my parents gave me, shh, don't tell anyone but it was Lacey. Kids called me Frilly, Fancy and silky. Even knickers! When I met Dave he just called me Candy right off, and I liked that. I mean everyone likes candy - and I sure wanted someone to like me.

I don't give a s--- what anyone calls me so long as they say my name with respect. I guess Gabby's the one that's stuck-and me a mute - go figure.

Mute? All this time, I didn't know that, Gabby. Just goes to show you how freeing CIC can be.

As for me, I really like my name, but then, my author took some time to come up with it. Nutmeg is weird, true, but it's meaningful to me. After all, my folks were hippies in the true sense of the word, and nutmeg isn't just a spice... supposedly, it's also a hallucinogen. Course, it can also be poisonous - but only in really large doses... or so I've been told.

Personally, Candy, I like Lacey as names go, but I can understand your desire to change it. Although I once knew a stripper named Candy, the name does seem to suit you - and I mean that in a nice way.

I guess I never really thought about it.

I do call Kaelin Kae sometimes. He hates it. :)

Oh, and once Marenya tried to get me to call her Renya, like other people do who know her. But I love her name. It's beautiful.

Laura Martone said...

I totally get your desire, Aidan, to call Marenya by her full name - it is lovely, after all - but when it comes to my characters, I'm obviously a big fan of nicknames (or at least shortened versions of names). Olivia is often called Liv, Nutmeg is Meg, and Indigo is Indy. But, for me, I love my given name - I think it suits me well (besides, there's that awesome film noir called Laura) - and for the record, I absolutely hate it when people call me Laurie. Ugh.

Ginger said...

I hate my name. My brother used to call me like a dog: "Here, Ginger!"

I would love to be called just about anything else. But I understand that Lacey is an old English name, actually. I saw a movie once with a heroine with that name and thought it was pretty, but then I didn't think about the implications.

Aidan calls me Gingersnap and Cinnamon, so don't feel bad.

I call him Chief (like a wild Indian) and I have another nickname I haven't used for him yet.

And yes, I do have magic now. I didn't want it, and I went through hell when I got it, and I wish I could give it back.

But I can't.

We had two cats when I was little called Nutmeg and Cinnamon. They were beautiful long-haired ginger and white cats.

Cinnamon tried to walk across the pond in april, not realizing the ice was melting. He drowned. Nutmeg lived to a very old age. I think she was more than 15.

Marenya said...

Hi Gabby! How is your unicorn?

Christine Hardy said...

By the way, I just enabled the mobile version of the site. Now that I have a smartphone I know what that means!

Aidan said...

(groan) I can't wait to hear it.

Being as I'm lord of the legacy, you should treat me with more respect.

Kaelin said...

Yes, Aidan. We'll get right on that.

Ginger said...

Hi Orly, how it going? You know, we try being nice to you and then you get embarrassed and tell us to stop it. I'm just following orders.

Raynor said...

I'm getting a new name tomorrow.

Aidan said...

Um, you're talking to me, Ginger?

I don't get it.

Saxen said...

As am I, thought I've already been using it.

Ginger said...

That's Orlando Bloom's nickname. You know... Legolas.

Aidan said...

(rolls eyes) I'm not a fucking pussy ELF!

Ginger said...

You sure look like one. Long white blond hair, leather pants, bow and arrows. Killer smile.

Besides, Legolas is NOT a pussy. You take it back.

Ginger said...

Raynor, Saxen. Would you two please get a room?

Saxen said...

There's the pot calling the kettle black, eh, Raynor?

I beg you forgive us any indiscretion. We are to be married tomorrow after all.

Marenya said...

I like the name Ashlyn. It means "little flame."

Aidan said...

I like it too, love.

Raynor said...

How about a pantry?

Saxen said...

(laughs) Raynor. You're terrible.

I love it.

Aidan said...

(snort) Good one, Raynor.

Of course there's always the garden. In a thunderstorm...

Ginger said...

Not you, too!

Aidan said...

(snort) I meant Raynor and Saxen.

Ginger said...

I meant Raynor. Sheesh.

Saxen said...

Perhaps you were right after all, Raynor...

Taffy said...

I dislike my name immensely. I would prefer "Goldenfur" or "Razorclaws."

Aidan said...

Razorclaws is cool.

Um. Who are you, Taffy? I don't know if we've met. I'm Aidan.

Cleome said...

I like my name. It suits me. All wood elves have plant names.

Does anyone happen to have any peanuts?

Taffy said...

Who am I? Who are you?

Aidan said...

I'm Aidan Trevet, a demidemon who's been hanging around here for years.

Jeez, just asking. Sorry.

Taffy said...

I am a cat. We do not introduce ourselves first.

You smell like you need a bath.

Aidan said...

Taffycat. Nice to meet you, short stuff.

And I had a bath...recently. Didn't I, Marenya?

Marenya said...

I think so. Maybe... I don't remember.

Ginger said...

Hello, Cleome. I'm Ginger. I don't have any peanuts. Would you care for a scone?

Would anyone else like one? I could whip up a batch. It seems like forever since I've baked anything. Having servants is nice but I am really ready to go home.

Taffy said...

I am not short. You are tall. Your legs make a fine scratching post.

Marianne said...

I hate my name. It's too old-fashioned. I'd rather be called Caitlyn or Jayme.

Peter said...

I like it.

Aidan said...

Hey Nighfala, you want to meet a snack...er, cat? It's name is Taffy and it's kind of snotty.

Olivia Harper said...

That's not very nice, Aidan. Taffy might be a bit sassy, but that's no reason to feed him/her to Nighfala.

Nutmeg Cross said...

I agree with Peter, Marianne. You have a very nice name. Old-fashioned isn't always a bad thing.

Oh, and Christine, that's funny that I share a name with your cat. Guess it bodes well for me that she lived longer than Cinnamon.

Olivia Harper said...

By the way, I have plenty of peanuts, Cleome. Though I'd love one of Ginger's scones!

Laura Martone said...

Hey, Christine, I'm not sure what it means that the site's mobile version has been enabled. I have an iPhone, so I'm not sure if I can access the mobile version or not. I'll have to look into it.

In the meantime, I have a question... I've noticed that there are a lot of new developments with the Aidan/Marenya, Kaelin/Ginger, and Saxen/Raynor storylines... are you and Betsy still writing together? Just wondering.

Christine Hardy said...

Hi, Laura! It means that if you scroll to the very bottom of a post, you'll see a link to "view mobile version" which formats posts and comments for a small screen. (I'm using it right now.)

Yes, we are still doing the threads as time allows. Pretty much every character has been put through one or more major crises. Ginger's had the worst of it until this recent episode of Aidan's. I am really learning how to torture my creations like a pro.

Cleome said...

Thank you, Olivia. I am ever so grateful. I don't have any money but I will pay you back somehow, I promise.

You see, I need them for the squirrels. They like peanuts better than acorns, and I'm hoping to lure them away from the tree where they are holding my brother prisoner.

Aidan said...

Maybe I could help, Cleome. I have a brother, too. And apparently I'm tall enough for a scratching post.

Taffy said...

Squirrels! I hate squirrels. I will help also, if you wish.

Ginger said...

Going to shoot some squirrels, Legolas?

Aidan said...

(snorts) Probably more like kicking them out of the way, huh?

Gabby said...

My Unicorn's well as always, Maryena, but I can't see him as much as I want. Hell to pay if the others found out about him. Wish I could run away and live in the wood but then they'd hunt, find and destroy like I would have done -before.

Nutmeg Cross said...

Somehow, I feel kinda sorry for the squirrels... unless they really are kidnappers, which I guess I wouldn't put past them. Cute but sneaky little devils.
