What if... You Could Have a Secret Identity?

We hear a lot about identity theft these days... someone stealing someone else's identity. But what if you could create your own identity and just use it when you needed or wanted to be someone else?

What kind of person would that be, and with what special qualities?  Who would you secretly like to be? And what would you do - for good or ill - while in your identity?

If I could have a secret identity, I think I'd be a time traveler...or wait, is that a superpower?

I've already pretended to be someone else, and while it gave me an advantage when I needed it, I think I'd rather just be myself.

It's too complicated to keep track.

I just want to be a Ranger. That's no secret.

Would a non identity do? I'd like to be invisible when I wanted. That would sure make things easier.

My wife can be invisible. Except to me. But I'd rather you just be yourself, Marenya.

I have a lot of identities in my wallet at any given time, and it is tough to keep track of.

Well, I would like to be a billionaire heiress, and have a yacht and travel the world, and buy anything I liked.

I would love to be rich as sin, and enjoy life as much as I wanted. And then come home and just live my quiet life and run the tearoom in between. No paparazzi, no notoriety.

The mysterious and beautiful heiress whom no one really knows.

I'd like to be big and strong and grown up. Maybe head of the Mafia, getting rid of anyone who crossed me. One kiss on the cheek and he'd be gone. someone else doing the dirty work. of course.

Then again, maybe I'd rather be an elfin type, living in the Mystical wood with all my animal friends, especially my unicorn. There'd be no death or sadness then. No need to keep up any tough image.

Wouldn't that be wonderful, Gabby?

I kind of miss the mystical wood at home. You don't appreciate those things until you don't have them any more.

That can be arranged, Ginger.

Ginger said...

Yeah, right, Kaelin. You know how to fix the lottery?

Marenya, I'll take you back to Belhanor to visit. Anytime you want.

My author's pretty busy right now - another travel guide's taking up her precious fiction-writing time - but she thinks she'd be remiss if I didn't answer this one...

Frankly, it's hard to desire a secret identity when I'm already living mine. For years, I lived in two worlds - as a housewife and mother in New Orleans, and as part of (if only in spirit) a secret underground community in southern Kentucky. Once I shed my aboveground life, however, the "secret" identity became my real one, and honestly, I couldn't ask for a better life.

Still, having access to a unicorn, like Gabby's, would be pretty amazing. Unfortunately, we don't have one of those in Ruby Hollow.
